Can I Carry A Spray Bottle on An Airplane Or High-speed Train?

We all know that to ensure the safety of passengers, there are certain restrictions on what items can be carried on airplanes, trains, and high-speed trains. Not all items can be carried on these vehicles. This includes products such as sprays. Some large-capacity spray bottles are not allowed on high-speed trains or airplanes, while small-capacity spray bottles or mini-refill bottles can be carried within the specified capacity. So, what exactly do large and small capacities refer to? This article will answer your questions and help you choose the most suitable travel spray bottle to enhance your travel experience.

1. High-speed trains

Although specific regulations may vary from country to country or region, many high-speed train systems around the world follow similar guidelines for spray bottles. Generally speaking, the focus is on the type of spray bottle and the nature of the liquid it contains.

(1) Self-spraying pressure containers

Liquids in self-spraying pressure containers, such as sunscreen spray, hairspray, and insecticide, are generally restricted. In many cases, the maximum capacity of each container is limited to 150 ml. For example, if you are traveling by high-speed rail in Europe, the capacity of a travel-sized bottle of self-spraying sunscreen should not exceed 150 ml. In addition, the total capacity of all such self-spraying pressure containers you carry should not exceed 600 ml. Therefore, if you plan to carry multiple self-spraying items, such as hair spray and insect repellent spray, their total capacity should not exceed 600 ml.

(2) Non-self-spraying pressure containers containing flammable ingredients

Items such as perfume, toilet water, and certain sprays containing flammable substances are also regulated. Generally, the capacity of each non-self-spraying pressure container should not exceed 100 ml, and only one of each type is allowed. Suppose you are traveling in Asia by high-speed rail and plan to carry a pocket sprayer filled with perfume. The bottle marked with the capacity should not exceed 100 ml. Even if the bottle is not full, if the marked capacity is more than 100 ml, it may not be allowed on the high-speed rail.

2. Aircraft

(1) International Air Travel Regulations

  • General Regulations for Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs)

On international flights departing from most airports worldwide, each item of liquid, aerosol or gel in your carry-on baggage must be in a container with a maximum capacity of 100 ml. This rule applies to travel-sized spray bottles, pocket sprayers and other similar containers. For example, if you are flying from North America to Europe, a travel-sized facial spray bottle must not exceed 100 ml. All such small containers should be placed in a resealable transparent plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 liter. Each passenger is only allowed to carry one such bag. Aviation authorities around the world strictly enforce this rule to improve flight safety.

  • Exceptions for Essential Medications

There are some exceptions. Essential medicines for travel, such as a diabetes first aid kit, may be carried in your carry-on bag in quantities not exceeding 100 ml, but must be presented for inspection at security. This ensures that passengers with medical needs have access to necessary medications during the flight. However, it is recommended to carry a doctor's prescription or medical certificate as supplementary documentation to avoid any problems at security.

  • Self-defense sprays

In the United States, domestic flights allow up to 118 ml (4 fluid ounces) of mace or pepper spray in checked baggage, subject to certain conditions. The device must have a reliable mechanism to prevent accidental spraying. However, international aviation regulations (ICAO/IATA) prohibit the carriage of self-defense sprays in both carry-on and checked baggage on international flights. Therefore, if you are traveling internationally, it is best to leave your self-defense sprays at home to avoid violating these strict regulations.

(2) Domestic Flights in Various Countries

China Passengers on domestic flights in China may carry up to 1 liter of liquid items (excluding alcohol) in their carry-on baggage. However, for the convenience of security checks, it is still recommended to use travel-sized spray bottles with a capacity of no more than 100 ml. Spray bottles with larger capacities should be placed in checked baggage. However, please remember that if the liquid in the spray bottle is flammable or a prohibited substance, it may not be allowed at all, even in checked baggage. Other Countries

In many other countries, domestic flight regulations for spray bottles are generally consistent with international liquids, gases, and aerosols (LAG) regulations. For example, in Australia, domestic flights generally require that each liquid container (including spray bottles) in carry-on baggage must not exceed 100ml, and all such items must be placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag. This harmonization of regulations across countries simplifies the travel experience for passengers, making it easier to comply with regulations regardless of their domestic travel destination.

In short, whether you're traveling by high-speed rail or air, it's crucial to understand the permitted capacity of spray bottles. Before packing, be sure to check the regulations for your specific transportation service and the countries you're traveling to or through to avoid any inconvenience at security. Try to carry spray bottles under 100ml. If your beauty and personal care products come in larger original packaging, consider using refillable, convenient spray bottles to ensure compliance and a smooth, worry-free trip.
